I read a short story once about a man who had a watch that stopped time. As I recall, it was a gift from an alien of an advanced race who set the unstoppable destruction of the Earth going, then stopped time for the man at thirty seconds prior and told him he could either keep time still and live out his natural lifespan in a frozen world, or let time move forward and die with everyone else.
